Summer o' socks 2008

A group of us from knit night have signed up for the Ravelry Summer of Socks knitalong. There are various contests including most socks knit, and best socks on vacation photos. While I'm not going to fool myself into thinking I have any chance at the most socks knit, there may be some other categories for me. But winning doesn't really matter, it's more about being inspired and challenged by other sock knitters, trying out new patterns, and, of course, attempting to make a dent into that sock stash!

In preparation for the knitalong, which starts on the first day of summer, I've been trying to finish up what I've got on the needles. The Monkey Kaw Kaws are done!

These are my first pair of Monkeys. And I love the Kaw Kaw colorway. I'll be thinking of sock camp whenever I have these on.

The second Leafling is still on the needles, but it's getting there. I love the squishy heel on this sock. (Pardon the blurry photo.)

The second Malabrigo sock is next, but I'm thinking I'm going to switch patterns on this one -- maybe the Broadripple or Jaywalker pattern. Here's the first sock, and it's getting lonely.

It's all about the meat...

One of my DH's happy places is Freedom Meat Locker in Watsonville (and quite frankly, it rates pretty high up there for me too.) It's a meat market and deli -- meat lovers would say, heaven-on-earth.

And here's what we came for:

pulled pork (even better w/ the sauce)

DH says that this is the best pulled pork he's had since his days in North Carolina. Sadly, my camera ran out of battery power so I couldn't take more photos, but they have a great selection of meat, sausages, and poultry to take home. The lower cholesterol options, like the marinated chicken breasts, are also delicious.

Helloooo, Cupcake!

I took a cupcake decorating class from Karen Tack, the author of Hello, Cupcake! to learn how to make some of her whimsical cupcake creations. With just frosting, store bought candies and cookies, anyone can make these playful cupcakes.

Here are few photos of Karen's demonstration cupcakes:

Once Karen demonstrated, then the class had a chance to try it for themselves. Here is my shark made with a Hostess Twinkie:

Spaghetti and meatballs were made with frosting for pasta, a Ferrer-Roche chocolate bon-bon for the meatball, and strawberry jam for the sauce:

Here's a westie dog with a miniature cupcake for his head, Starburst fruit chew for his tongue, mini marshmallows for his muzzle and ears, all on top of a regular size cupcake for his body:

My absolute favorite was the sunflower made with Oreo and mini Oreo cookies for the flower center, spearmint chews for the leaves, and finally, red M&Ms for the lady bugs.

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?

I'm having trouble with this one. Who can remember ten years ago? I'm thinking I was just promoted at my day job, taking my career way too seriously and killing myself with the business travel and stress. Now I'm older, hopefully a little wiser and making more time for knitting.

2. What are 5 things on my to-do list for today:

clean up around the house in anticipation of friends coming over later for a bbq

TJ's baked jalapeno cheese crunchies, Tim's jalapeno chips, chocolate, edamame (had to throw in something on the healthy side)

give a lot of money away to people who have the brain power and vision to make our world a better place

take care of loved ones, including making sure DH no longer has to work, but I'm certain he wouldn't be able to help himself

collect Manolos, Choos, and Louboutins

A knitting trinket

I've been using those not so pretty plastic stitch markers forever -- even those funky looking pink things. I've never been crazy about them, but didn't think I had any choice until I started seeing photos of cute pretty stitch markers that knitters were using on Ravelry. I was almost too embarrassed to post a photo of my Clapotis because I was using the plastic markers. Then I realized I could purchase some prettly little markers, or better yet, break out those beading supplies that have been collecting dust in my closet since the early nineties, and make my own!

Only problem is, it takes time away from knitting. Now to make enough for my Clapotis -- which is still a WIP after months and months...
